#10. Break Free from Social Media Quicksand

Our first jaw-dropping tip is all about keeping social media from becoming a time sink. The fine folks at Thrive Hive put together ten great tips on how to make the most of your time using social media to grow your business.

Because, let’s face it, Facebook and Twitter and all the others can eat up your entire day if you’re not careful.

So a lot of these are organizational tips which may very well take some ramp-up time. Blocking out a monthly schedule of posts is something you may find you do the 25th of every month in anticipation of the next month. Or maybe you plan an entire quarter or even a year in advance.

This is great except you need to also be ready to zig rather than zag. After all, something could come along and you’d have to comment on it immediately.

Apple carts were meant to be upset.

Another tip we really liked was to repurpose and reuse content. Fresh content is awesome, of course. But there is no reason whatsoever why you can’t reuse something that worked before. Consider this.

A Time Sink Story about Facebook

In 2016, according to Statista, just less than one in six Americans had at least 200 friends on Facebook. So let’s go with 250 friends. Let’s say they’re all active. And that makes sense – Statista also says (this time, the stats are from 2018), the average American Facebook user spends 39 minutes per day on Facebook. And there are some 214 million American Facebook users. Plus there are around 328 million Americans.

So you’ve got 250 friends and they all spend a little over a half an hour per day on the site. And you’re just like your friends in terms of how often you’re on and for how long. Everyone does something; let’s say every 3 minutes to stay on the conservative side. That works out to 13 (39/3) actions per day. With 250 friends, that comes to 750 interactions. Of course any numbers of these are grouped together (“10 of your friends liked this post.”).

Your 39 minutes works out to 2,340 seconds. To pay attention to all 750 actions, that gives you just over three seconds of attention. Most of us take longer than that, even to read and react to a short meme.

No wonder people get stuck on Facebook longer than they initially intended.

Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle

So with all of this time online, something’s going to be missed. In fact, lots of things are missed. As a result, reusing your content is downright necessary. And even if everyone saw everything all the time (an impossible situation), you would still need to reuse and repost. Why? Because of time zone differences, and differences in when people access the site.

So yell encore! And reuse your content.

#9. Come on Along on the Amazing Journey – We Know the Way

The next awesome tip is about leadership.

Are you a new boss? Then Young Upstart’s got just the thing – eight ways to become a more effective leader. For new managers in particular, there probably hasn’t been a lot of training in effectively leading.

We really loved their #4 – developing a positive work environment. Recognizing contributions and showing your appreciation can make all the difference in the world.

Here’s a fer-instance.

Magic Words Do the Trick

Wally Worker gets promoted. He’s used to Carol Coworker just doing her thing. But now she’s doing it for him.

One day, he says, “Carol, do this!” And Carol grumbles but she gets it done. If she gets a whole month’s worth of that treatment, or more, Carol is going to seriously consider updating her resume.

But what if, instead, Wally said, “Carol, could you please do this?” And then when she finished, he said, “Thank you.” And then later that day or week, and also at review time, he said, “I appreciate everything that you do.” If Carol continues to get this sort of treatment, she’ll enjoy her job more. She’ll volunteer, come in early, and stay late, if necessary. This is because the company will matter to her. And Wally’s approval and kindness will matter to her as well.

This doesn’t mean she’ll never, ever leave. But if she leaves in 20 years instead of two, Wally’s just saved the company a significant amount of money. And all he had to do was say the magic words.

#8. Well, that’s a Horse of a Different Color

Our following life-changing tip concerns the colors and typography of your brand. Never thought of that before? Fortunately, the good folks at Impact have.

Throwing Shades

According to the article, a good 62-90% of initial product assessments are based on color alone. And consumers – generally – like red and yellow. Now think of all of the places you see either or both in branding. Got that? Good!

Color, however, does not have universal associations. The blue that Americans see as maybe competent or even sad, others might see as love (it’s associated with the Hindu god, Krishna).

Contrast also really, really matters. Yellow on a white background is very hard to read. It’s the same with dark blue on a black background. And don’t get us started with how one bright color against a different bright-colored background can sometimes look like it is pulsing or throbbing.

We’re getting headaches just thinking about that.

Brand colors have to be consistent. This is why Coca-Cola’s red never varies.

You’re Not Our Type. No, Wait, Maybe You Are

The article also looks at typography, going into the differences between serif and sans serif fonts, but also into the spacing between a pair of characters (called kerning) and between all of the words in a line (called tracking).

Letter spacing can enhance or detract from readability. It can also make text seem cramped or expansive. The next time you go to the movies (or just watch Netflix), do a little experiment. When you look at the titles of a film, are they close together or far apart?

Spoiler alert: they’re usually pretty far apart or at least farther apart than we normally see in writing. Why? It’s because it tends to make a movie title look more ‘epic’.

#7. But Mo-om!

For our next sensational tip, we looked at how to engage your children while you work from home. At YFS Magazine (Young, Fabulous, and Self-Employed, dontcha know), they tackle this problem head-on.

Of course every child is different and ages will make for even more variations. But a few tips stood out to us. One was to encourage reading and arts and crafts for pleasure. Hauling out the crayons or the glue and construction paper is a terrific way to not only occupy children, but also to give them something they can build on later.

Reading for fun is a great habit to encourage, and so is creativity. Why not take advantage of the down time and try to cultivate one or the other, or both?

Of course school age children will have homework. But encouraging crafting and reading will be productive and pleasant activities – and your bundles of joy won’t be in front of a TV all the time.

#6. Search and Ye Shall Find

This tip is so simple, but it works! EAskMe created an easy to understand and short guide to understanding the difference between organic marketing and paid advertising.

Organic marketing has to do with SEO (search engine optimization), in that this is content intended to pull an audience in. Kind of like this blog post. However, organic marketing can also, at times, take a while.

Paid advertising is used more to push content to users and cast a wide net, hoping to catch some interest along the way. However, a good quarter of all people online are using ad blockers. And of the other three quarters, a lot of them are ignoring ads.

At EAskMe, it’s pretty easy to see which method they prefer.

#5. Stop Poisoning Your Business Success with Toxic Habits

Grab this mind-blowing tip while it’s hot! Stop poisoning your business success with toxic habits and get more done while taking better care of yourself. Lady Boss Blogger says regular sleeping in is a toxic habit, but so is not listening to your body and resting when you need to.

So which one is it?

The truth is; the two do not have to be mutually exclusive. This is because another piece of listening to your body is exercising. If you have trouble sleeping, it isn’t always due to stress or loud neighbors. It can also be that you’ve got energy that you just haven’t burned.

So burn some, and get righteously tired at the end of the day. Good quality sleep and self-care works for both tips.

Getting to bed on time, after a day filled with work, yes, but also a work out, can help you in more ways than one.

#4. Is that what you Kids are Calling it These Days?

Check out this spectacular tip, all about business on Snapchat. Oberlo gives two exceptional reasons for doing business on Snapchat. One is that Generation Z (the generation after millennials) – at least, 71% of it – uses Snapchat every day. Yes, really!

And the other is that Snapchat harnesses one thing extremely well, and that is the fear of missing out (FOMO). As a result, if your company offers flash sales, for example, then Snapchat is amazing.

The article delves into several uses for this interesting social media platform, the sixth most popular in the world. Be sure to read the article and don’t miss out!

#3. Brush Your Teeth, and Then…

It’s not your imagination: this winning tip can make you way more productive. Remember when we talked about sleep in tip #5, above? Well Teach a CEO puts that concept on steroids and gives us seven things that successful people will do before going to sleep.

One that we liked, which also ties neatly to tip #5, is the idea of taking a stroll in the evening. It’s a great way to wind down. And it’s also, assuming you’re walking after supper, a terrific way to digest a bit before trying to get some sleep. If you’ve ever had acid reflux, this can be a key move.

Another fabulous idea is the concept of a nighttime ritual. Remember when you were a child and there was something you did before retiring for the evening? It may have been a good night kiss or a prayer or a bath or tooth brushing or some combination thereof.

By creating and upholding rituals such as these, our minds prepare for sleep. These are calming things to do. Plus they might even help you remember where things are, or at least remember to put your stuff back where you got it from originally. If you always do the same thing, in the same order, when you go to bed, then you’ll know where you left your glasses.

#2. So Awesome, You Can Bank on it

Our second to last unbeatable tip can give you a new perspective on opening up a business bank account. Fit Small Business lays out five easy steps in order, making the entire process a snap.

Our favorite part of this superb article is about the documentation you need to bring with you. Fit Small Business conveniently separates the requirements for sole proprietors, S-corporations, and more. Follow their advice and save time, money, and frustration, all in one neat package.

#1. Achoo! Make Some Viral Content

We saved the best for last. For our favorite remarkable tip, we focused on becoming internet famous due to the creation of viral content. Red Website Design put together an outstanding infographic on how to take this particular tiger by the tail.

It may seem as if virality is an impossible idea to quantify, pin down, and predict. Except in at least some instances, it is. For example, people love quizzes and lists. Sharp-eyed readers might be nodding their heads right about now – 10 Brilliant Business Tips? Surely that’s a coincidence!

Er, no.

Help Me, Help You

One great predictor or at least indicator of virality potential is whether a post or article is practical. Upload a video teaching people how to fold a fitted sheet, and it might just go viral.

Another indicator is fitting into an already popular space. Hence if aardvarks suddenly became the hottest pet of the year, content about what to name your new ant-eating pet would have the potential to go viral.

This is kind of similar to newsjacking, which is when you are able to successfully connect your content or product or service to a news story.

But in both instances, time is of the essence. But if timed properly, helpful or interesting content, related to a current news story or fad, could very well become the next viral sensation.
