#10. Save the Planet

Our first jaw-dropping tip is all about recycling e-waste. Small Biz Trends says there are a ton of ways for businesses to adopt green or at least greener solutions.

Perhaps our favorite tip was the one about donating used electronics. Now, of course this also fits in perfectly with another tip – to destroy data. We think it’s a marvelous idea to offer used electronics to a school or a nonprofit. This school or nonprofit organization of course does not even have to be in the United States.

I Wandered, Lonely as a Cloud – Computer, That Is

We don’t think the poet Wordsworth predicted cloud computing. But one thing even he would know is that clouds break down far more easily than machinery does. Keeping data in the cloud can make it so you can take longer between upgrades. And it might just help out with data deletion later.

Another huge benefit of keeping a lot of your organization’s information in the cloud is perhaps less obvious – you don’t have to go into the office to pick up work. And that can help to save the earth, too.

#9. Millennial Marketing Mania

The next awesome tip is about how to market to the juggernaut of people born between 1981 and 1996. Fundera says this mixed group isn’t as much of a monolith as we may have been led to believe. And the people who are still in high school? They aren’t millennials at all. According to Pew Research, those folks are Generation Z.

Millennials have a ton of buying power, and will likely surpass Baby Boomers in spending soon.

But how do you market to them?

Experiences, Discounts, and Sharing

The holy trinity (if you will) is to address millennial desires directly. A lot of the people in this group would prefer an experience to a trinket, so if you’re going to offer rewards, tickets are better than tokens.

Discounts, particularly sharable ones, are also a bit hit with millennials. And be sure to make it easy and pleasant to review your business and its offerings. Millennial customers are very big on reading and writing product and service reviews. Always be sure to ask for feedback and ratings.

#8. Designed for Perfection

Our following life-changing tip concerns hiring the right web designer. DIY Marketers says one thing we really love – hire slow, fire fast.

You want to spend some time thinking about this. It is, after all, an investment in your business’s future. So it is not to be taken lightly. Great tips also included testing a candidate on a smaller project and making sure you own the design (copyright fights can be nasty; don’t let one happen if you can at all help it).

We also loved the idea of working with a designer with a firm grasp of SEO. Search engine optimization should be at the heart of every single design. Don’t let your web design shoot your SEO strategy in the foot!

#7. New to Planning

For our next sensational tip, we looked at a number of business planning tips for first-time entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship Life says a business plan is key. It’s not just something you whip together because it sounds kind of like it just might be a good idea.

We especially loved the advice to set specific goals within a reasonable time frame. And we also loved the tip to be realistic with your numbers. After all, lying to yourself about your numbers will never, ever do you any favors.

Pro Tip

A business plan will also be an absolute necessity if/when you go to the bank for a business loan. They are going to want one anyway, and so will a number of online and alternative lenders.

So why not have it done before it’s needed so you can stop stewing about it?

#6. Be More Productive with These Apps

This tip is so cool, and it works! Selz has gathered together a list of seven great apps to make you and your employees more productive. We thought LastPass was a really neat idea. It gathers up all of your passwords under one master password. The passwords stay on your hard drive, but only you can access them.

Beats the heck out of trying to remember how to get into an email account you last used six years ago.

#5. Be Ready for a Business Crisis

Grab this mind-blowing tip while it’s hot!

You may not want to think about having a business crisis, but they happen all the time. Better to be ready, than not. G2 Crowd says the best way to handle a PR crisis is to be prepared.

We could not agree more.

Of course there are things you cannot plan for. But for those which you can, you should be taking advantage of the power of foresight. How do you do this? By operating under the assumption that your company will, at some point in time, experience a business crisis.

Our favorite bit of advice from the article concerned actually two things which work together perfectly. The first is to create placeholder messaging. And the second is to respond as soon as possible. This kind of preparation can only help you.

True Story of a Business Crisis

In 2015, Sabra hummus was recalled, due to the presence of listeria contamination. But what is most interesting about this is, the Food and Drug Administration did not lead the charge. Rather, Sabra itself performed a series of routine tests. One sample turned up positive. And so, out of an abundance of caution, the company recalled a lot of its product. Voluntarily.

Instead of waiting around to be told to recall its product, the company acted immediately. This defused the problem – which has recurred in later years. Yet the company remains in business because they are so proactive.

Imagine just how much worse it would have all been if they had not been testing their product?

Back to You

So, what can you do? Probably the easiest thing you can do is get a team together. Make it clear exactly what the chain is. Who can answer what? Your front-line person cannot be expected to handle everything.

Keep someone ready at all times. Does this sound like overkill? You’ll be awfully glad you took such a precaution, if you do. And this doesn’t mean someone has to stay up at all hours! Rather, they need to be reachable and ready in case there’s a problem.

Pro Tip

Here’s a little something extra for when you set up your business.

Buy not just your domain (from a provider such as GoDaddy), but also buy variants such as yourdomainnamestinks.com and yourdomainname.us, .tv, .org, .net, etc. You will be awfully glad you did if there’s a crisis. Why? Because you’ve just made it a lot harder for disgruntled customers or former employees to spoof your website.

When you are right smack dab in the middle of a crisis, preplanning will make all the difference.

#4. Take Your Ecommerce Business from Good to Spectacular

Check out this spectacular tip, all about improving your ecommerce business. Noobpreneur says there are a lot of ways to improve. They offer great examples of low-hanging fruit to pluck.

Analytics, Oh How We Love Them

Of course we were thrilled to see the emphasis on analytics. And why not? Ask for feedback – and you may get it anyway from millennials (see tip #9) so you may as well ask first. Take suggestions to heart.

But also look at Google Analytics. Are customers abandoning their shopping carts? If so, why? If your site is hard to navigate or slow, or if you are asking for unnecessary information, then those can all be reasons why a customer would ditch at the end.

Analytics are useless unless they’re read. And even the analytics you read are useless if you never take action.

#3. M-O-T-I-V-A-T-I-O-N – What’s That Spell?

It’s not your imagination: this winning tip can help bring more engagement and motivation to your workforce. Start Up Professionals says there are some great ways to help keep your workforce engaged.

We think the best of their tips was all about asking for help in eliminating useless tasks. You know, the TPS reports in the 1999 movie Office Space.

This Really Happened

Way back in 1994, your intrepid blog writer had one of the world’s worst jobs, adjusting claims for an insurance carrier. One of the requirements was to fill out a sheet on each claim. Now, if you have ever worked in claims, one of the things you learn rather quickly is that sometimes claims settle long before there’s much of a file on them. Hence the case could be settled long before the creation of said form.

Which was required anyway.

And your intrepid blog writer saw (with my very own eyes) the reports were never, ever read. They just stacked up in an office. But there would be hell to pay if we didn’t do them.

This, amidst a thousand other reasons, is why your intrepid blog writer no longer works there.

#2. Your Online Business Can Reach for the Next Level

Our second to last unbeatable tip can give you a new perspective on getting your online business to the next level. Young Upstarts says goal-setting is key – so three cheers (again!) for planning and measuring.

There were two tips which on the surface might feel like they’re opposites. But they aren’t. Automating marketing means removing tedious tasks from your shoulders. It can mean anything from chatbots to email templates.

And the other tip is to focus on customer service. Essentially, if you are able to drop the boring, repetitive work, you should be able to better concentrate on your customers and their needs.

After all, aren’t they why you’re there in the first place?

#1. Trust is Everything

We saved the best for last. For our favorite remarkable tip, we focused on establishing trust with your newest clients. Under 30 CEO says there are a good half a dozen means of doing just that. We highly recommend reading the entire article as we are only going to focus on one aspect – doing what you say.

Reliability is truly vital in customer relationships. There are any number of fly by night operations out there. So much commerce these days is not performed face to face, so we have lost a lot of our social cues when it comes to trustworthiness.

Therefore, the best way to establish and maintain a reputation for reliability is to, well, be reliable.

Funny how that works.

So which one of our brilliant business tips was your favorite? And which one will you be implementing now?
