#10. S-s-s-sabotage

Our first jaw-dropping tip is all about how you just might be sabotaging your B2B sales efforts. TSheets suggested there may be several reasons why you just might not be closing deals or at least not as well or as many as you could be.

Ask, and Ye Just Might Receive

Our favorite tip was the one about not asking for the sale. We see a similar tip all the time when it comes to job search advice, and it really rings true. Of course everyone knows what a sales meeting is all about. You’d have to be pretty clueless if you didn’t! Still, asking for the sale is a key component of closing. Why?

Because people will hem and haw forever if you let them! So ask! Ask for the sale so the answer isn’t an automatic no.

Don’t Forget the Little Guy

You’re a small business. So why are you only trying to sell to big businesses? For so many B2B companies, the focus is on the bigger players. But small businesses make up a large percentage of the businesses in America.

Plus, wouldn’t your small business prospects relate well to you? And maybe even better than your big business prospects do? It’s worth a shot, at least to figure out if it works.

#9. Teach Us Your Ways, Oh Business Wise One

The next awesome tip is about ten timeless business lessons from a seven year agency career. Matthew Gartland wrote for Smart Passive Income.

Your Behavior Matters – A Lot

There were two tips we felt could be combined into one. One of them was about how your company culture starts with your behavior. And the other concerned how your success is a factor of how you treat others, including your team.

We were so pleased to see this! For every pit bull (sorry, that’s a misnomer; pit bulls are often sweet critters) manager, we hope there are ten or twenty or a thousand who aren’t just out for themselves. And we hope those people treat others the way they would like to be treated.

Integrity Matters

We also loved this tip, and it is exceptionally timely, coming in the same week as the Michael Cohen testimony in front of Congress. Regardless of your political leanings and beliefs, one thing is for certain. Cohen lied at one time or another and perhaps (probably) several. Whether he has stopped lying is a matter of conjecture and interpretation. But there is no doubt he has lied.

And this lack of integrity has come to bite him back, big time. Now, your occasional ethical lapse probably won’t come with a stiff prison sentence. But if you act as if every possible ethical lapse would, then guess what happens?

You stay on the straight and narrow. Three cheers for doing the right thing!

#8. From College to Company

Our following life-changing tip concerns how college students can start low-cost businesses. Entrepreneur magazine put together some great opportunities. Many of these took advantage of students’ schedules and of their energy. The latter included nanny, mover, delivery person, and house cleaner.

Other ideas dovetailed with students’ time spent in front of computers. These included tutoring, resume writing, and bookkeeping. Plus there were a few wild cards like jewelry making and event planning.

Who knows? Maybe a college job could turn into a lifetime gig!

#7. Tap into Trademarks

For our next sensational tip, we headed on over to the legal side of business. Foundr put together a sensational article of information all about trademarks. Even Ecommerce businesses might want to register a trademark. The article shows exactly how to do that. And much for importantly, it tells you why.

Trademarks are not just for the biggest players in business. And they can save you serious money.

#6. Defusing the Managerial Loose Cannon

This tip is so true, but we’re not so sure if it works! Young Upstarts noted there are some people who just plain aren’t cut out for management. Are you working with one?

We have to say, though, there was one thing about this article which kind of disturbed us. See, we think the person being described just might on the autism spectrum. The lack of self-awareness and lack of awareness of making others uncomfortable are the clues. This person certainly seems as if they may have at least an inkling of these issues.

And firing or not promoting this guy because of a medical condition he can’t help – er, where have we heard that before?

Oh yeah, it’s in the American Disabilities Act.

So we’re kind of concerned about this. And although we can appreciate the situation the writer was in, we’re also seeing the other side. Perhaps you are, too.

By emphasizing - Fearless Empowered Female Entrepreneurs and More –10 Brilliant Business Tips of the Week#5. Fearless Empowered Female Entrepreneurs

Grab this mind-blowing tip while it’s hot!

Need to be fearless and empowered? Female entrepreneurs in particular need this! The Harvard Business Review recently examined how retail employers such as Ikea can better help women into leadership roles within their organizations.

Some of their ideas (both from HBR and from the examined retailers) are indeed applicable to smaller businesses as well.

Mentorship and Management Training

Your intrepid blog writer came of age during a time when men dominated leadership roles pretty much everywhere. And when a woman would attempt to join the ranks, she was often alone. And that can be difficult.

By emphasizing mentoring and managerial training, management becomes less competitive and more nurturing focused. Managers can become less like task masters and more like the coaches they should be.

Kicking the Teeth Out of Sexual Harassment

The other area which we loved was about handling sexual harassment training. The concept is to make it available to everyone in an organization. And this is regardless of rank, position, gender, or seniority.

The statistics are sobering. Apparently more than one-quarter of front line retail and food service female workers experience sexual harassment – and 79% of them quit. The costs of replacing workers is so high that sexual harassment training isn’t just a good idea from a legal standpoint. It could also save scads of money.

Plus it’s the right thing to do.

#4. VoIP to the Rescue!

Check out this spectacular tip, all about challenges successful business women can solve with VoIP. Women on Business noted virtual telephony can solve a number of problems (and not just for women, of course!).

Personal Time/Work Time

For every business owner out there, it’s a struggle. Personal time needs to be something you respect. And work time needs to be something you manage. They tend to mix. A lot.

With VoIP, you aren’t tied to a desk or office. Plus the use of a vanity or 800 number means everything looks and feels more professional than just using your cell phone. And when a client or worker calls you during personal hours, you can answer fast, delegate, and be done with it.

Delegate!

Our favorite tip was using VoIP to triage calls. A structured call flow can divert calls one way or another. The flow can have a basis in the hour of the call or priority level. Talk about taking back your personal time….

#3. From Mom to Mom

It’s not your imagination: this winning tip from GoDaddy can really help mompreneurs get things done. And we bet it would work with people who have other major commitments, such as if you are caring for an ailing parent or spouse – or even if you’re moving or going to school while working.

Time Time Tick Tick Tick

Perhaps our favorite was using a timer. We are great, big fans of blocking out time to do whatever we need to. This is true whether the time is for a jog or to write fiction or nap or clean the kitchen.

These are appointments, and they are with your best, most important, and most beloved client – yourself!

Be Proud

ask for the sale - Fearless Empowered Female Entrepreneurs and More –10 Brilliant Business Tips of the WeekWe also loved the encouragement, even when things go off the rails (hey, it happens).

Your intrepid blog writer recalls Mom working – I was a latchkey child, back when that was a thing. This was from age ten and up. I learned how (and why) to cook, clean, and do the wash. And I also learned a bit about time management and how sometimes you just have to depend on yourself.

Times have changed, and some of this may no longer be practical. But by working, you are showing your child you can have a good working life. And just how important and fulfilling it can be.

#2. Share and Share Alike

Our second to last unbeatable tip can give you a new perspective on how to get content influencers to share your content. Buzzsumo put together some extremely helpful tips to give you great ideas of how to use their service to locate content influencers. And most importantly, they showed how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

#1. D is for Deduction

We saved the best for last. For our favorite remarkable tip, we focused on the tax season, which is in full swing. Penny Hoarder listed a number of smart monetary deductions if you work from home.

Smartly, the article differentiated between people who work from home for someone else, and people who are self-employed. Much of the article focused on self-employment. For the self-employed, one very important consideration is Social Security.

For both style of worker, the deductions tended to center around equipment. Can you deduct business lunches, rent, or a new stapler?

Go ahead and read the article (which we feel is truly worthwhile) and find out!

So which one of our brilliant business tips was your favorite? And which one will you be implementing now?
