#10. Let Your Goodness Shine Through

Our first jaw-dropping tip is all about the inspiring act of making a difference. Inspire to Thrive offered some awesome ideas on how to make a difference.

We have to say, we’re a little unsure about starting our own charity. But the rest of it looked terrific. It’s all of the ways we, as business people, can help make the world a better place.

Go Local

We were a big fan of this particular idea. Get involved in your local community, and help make it better. But how?

Here are a few ideas, straight from us!

  • Sponsor highway trash pickup
  • Offer a scholarship at a local high school or college
  • Start an internship program at your company
  • Start a company charity/give back day, where the participants serve at a soup kitchen or perform other charitable works in exchange for an extra day off

Hey I Just Met You, and This is Maybe Not so Crazy…

We also loved their suggestion to start a relationship with a charity. For the Boston Red Sox (for example), that’s the Jimmy Fund, to help children with cancer. The charity has a fundraising day during the regular season, their name is prominently advertised in Fenway Park, and the athletes make it a point to visit sick children at local hospitals.

Your company may not be World Series champs, but they may be able to do something similar. Can you offer a small space in your company newsletter to the charity to trumpet their good works? Or make it a point to donate some sort of vital equipment? That could be a heart-lung machine or a slew of computers to an inner city school or vehicles for any number of charities. The limits are your own imagination and budget.

#9. To Thine Own Self Be True, Marketer

The next awesome tip is about mistakes you can avoid in content marketing.

None other than Neil Patel bared his errors to the world. His seven deadlyish ‘sins’ are a wonderful object lesson in how thinking short-term inevitably burns you in the long term.

ROI, OMG, ROI!

For every stab in the dark he made, Patel notes he really should have been caring more about ROI (return on investment). That meant, for example, spending $400,000 on getting Facebook followers was not a viable strategy as it turned out to not have a very good ROI.

This leads us to one of our favorite things to tell folks in marketing – and yes, yes, we know we repeat ourselves! It’s to measure everything.

You’ll never know what’s working if you don’t measure.

We urge you to check out Patel’s article (with its enclosed video) as there is a lot more in there than we can fit into this blog post!

#8. Feed the Feedback Beast

Our following life-changing tip concerns how to get honest feedback. The Harvard Business Review presented some exceptional tips for getting great feedback.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

According to the author (she manages a leadership and development firm), a lot of clients seem to only want to hear the negatives.

Say what?

You would think it would be the other way around, eh? But perhaps that can be explained by busy people thinking hearing about the awesome things they are doing would be a waste of time.

Except they’re wrong.

See, positive feedback (not pat on the back praise) can give people specifics which they can try to duplicate with precision. And there’s a psychological component to it all. After all, how many times have you been motivated to change when everything was criticized and you felt awful?

Much like in tip #9, the concept of being specific loomed large. Praise is when you say, “Good job!” Positive feedback is when you say, “The Johnson demonstration was fantastic; the slides really resonated with the prospect, and I bet we could carry that success over to other demonstrations.”

Specific. Actionable. Future-looking. You can’t go wrong with modeling your positive feedback around such characteristics.

#7. Marketer, Jane Marketer

For our next sensational tip, we looked at a dozen ways to spy on your competitors. No, these don’t involve microfilm and an Aston-Martin (darn!). StoreYa offered terrific tips on how to check up on how the other half does business.

Now, keep in mind, the article focuses on product sales and Shopify. But there were plenty of nuggets of non-Shopify information in there.

For example, did you know you could use Mention to track your competitors? Or that you can spy directly on your competition’s Facebook info and ads?

Read the article as there’s lots more in there, particularly if your wheelhouse is product sales. These are game-changing ideas!

#6. Lights Out!

This tip is so practical, and it works!

Ever had a blackout at your business? Talk Business UK walks you through how to keep the lights going out from cutting off profits.

Their best tip, we felt, was all about getting an uninterruptible power supply for your business. The idea is to at least have enough battery power to shut off electronics safely.

Yet we would go one step further, with adding a generator.

The idea of having a business continuity plan was also stellar. We would add, though, that insurance is a must here. While you’ve probably got insurance for your business, but do you have business continuity or business interruption insurance? As a bonus, we urge you to check out this basic information from MHA Consulting.

And protect yourself!

#5. Turn a Happiness Profit

Grab this mind-blowing tip while it’s hot! And it’s all about making happiness profit.

Happy employees help you make more money. What a concept! The folks at Dyer News outlined some exceptional ways that pleased as punch employees could add to the bottom line.

We especially loved one of our favorite things, which is working from home! But we didn’t think the article quite went far enough. Er, what?

It’s like this.

Working from Home is Awesome

While the article touched on dress codes and flexible hours, there are other enormous perks to working from home. Those perks help both employer and employee. And, yes, they increase the bottom line. Fer instance…

Keep Your Germs to Yourself

When the user - The Happiness Profit –10 Brilliant Business Tips of the WeekEveryone of us has seen someone at work or during commuting who really should have stayed in bed. Working from home eliminates that as an issue. Furthermore, those people who come in, even when sick (‘presenteeism’) may have used up all their sick time or they don’t get compensated if they don’t work. Hence for them, it may be imperative to work. They don’t want to be insensitive to their coworkers – but their mortgage payment is coming up, and the kids need shoes, and….

By allowing working from home, even if it’s not every single day, an employee can be present even when fighting off a nasty infection. Of course, it should be your position (it is certainly ours) that employees need to care for themselves and not burn out. But this gives an out, a kind of compromise.

Pro tip: do your sick as a dog employee a favor, and don’t push them for as much production as you usually do. Let and expect them to nap or go to the doctor.

Trust is Golden

The other bit about working from home which we felt the article missed was about the inherent trust in having employees work from home. You’re not hovering over them. And you’re not turning surveillance cameras on them. This is key. Feeling trusted is a big piece of the ‘feeling valued’ puzzle. Working from home can do that.

Bottom Line Bonuses

For businesses that take Dyer News’s ideas to heart, the rewards can be great. Happy employees are less likely to look for other work – and training new people is expensive. Imagine doing that a lot less. Happier employees will also work harder, taking pride in their product. Consider the cost savings in having to check work a lot less often. And happy employees will also recommend your company as a great place to work, and they’ll refer their friends – which could save you on recruiting costs.

The gaps in the article were rather small, we felt. This is an article well worth reading. After all, we could all use a little more happiness in our lives. Feeling great is yet another part of the happiness profit.

#4. Following the Bouncing Website

Check out this spectacular tip, all about reducing bounce rate on your website. Red Website Design came up with a lucky list of 13 ways to reduce this annoying and unprofitable stat.

What we really loved about this list was the emphasis on user-oriented design. When the user experience is easier, better, and faster, website visitors practically can’t help but to stick around and learn more.

#3. Data, Data Data

It’s not your imagination: this winning tip can help you better manage customer data. Zendesk Sell gave a great rundown of eight things you can do to get your arms around your customer data.

Asking - The Happiness Profit –10 Brilliant Business Tips of the WeekDon’t Ask for What You Don’t Really Need

We have to say, this was our favorite tip.

Does your firm need to know your customers’ shoe sizes to be able to sell to them? No? Then why is that question on your sign-up form?

Asking for customer data you don’t need and never use just gives you more data to manage, and more data that could be the subject of a breach, and for no discernible ROI. So don’t do that.

#2. You Can Be a Content Marketing Superstar

Our second to last unbeatable tip can give you a new perspective on ten skills which are vital for getting to the next level with content marketing. John Chow’s list is comprehensive and easy to follow.

Our two favorites were patience and anticipation. Anticipation is to try to get ahead of the pack and do the new thing. Got some sort of new product or service coming out? Then get ahead and create content about it – lots of content. And while everyone’s crystal ball is cloudy, if you read and pay attention to markets and trends, you may be able to be first in your niche.

Patience is the other side of the coin. When you first start putting out content, it may take a while for it to find its intended audience. But don’t give up! It can happen, particularly if you’re persistent.

#1. Shapes of Great Things to Come

We saved the best for last. For our favorite remarkable tip, we focused on Nav’s awesome article on how to get your business in shape for 2019 – and beyond.

We truly loved two tips of the five. One was – of course – to check your business credit scores! We feel every business should know and understand their credit. You will never know what your firm is financially capable of without this knowledge.

The other tip we adored was all about finishing what you start. True story time.

True Story

Bet you thought we’d go through this week without a war story, eh? So your intrepid blog writer is a published author. Fer realz, fiction and everything.

And the independent writing community can be kind of odd. There’s a great disconnect between people who are first starting out, versus those who are old pros. There are people who quit their day jobs, and there are those who just do this on the side, for fun.

Inevitably, there is someone who outwardly seems amazing, the kind of writer to emulate and admire. But just as inevitably, that one person (the exception to the rule; most writers aren’t like this) has nothing to their writing resume. And they are more than happy to criticize and give advice, but they never put themselves out there.

Why? Because they have nothing finished. None of their books say THE END. The same is true of your business’s projects. So tie a bow on some of them this year, okay?

So which one of our brilliant business tips was your favorite? And which one will you be implementing now?
